how to survive finals week

"HOLY-CRAP-IT-IS-FINALS-WEEK-AND-I-HAVE-TO-CRAM-A-WHOLE-SEMESTER'S-WORTH-OF-INFORMATION-IN-TONIGHT-BEFORE-THE-EXAM-TOMORROW-SO-I-AM-GOING-TO-PULL-AN-ALL-NIGHTER!!"

Don’t do that. ^

I know, I know finals are stressful. But studying for 10 hours straight and staying up all night is NOT going to help you on your final.

I’ll be honest. If you are trying to learn a whole semester’s worth of information the night before the exam, you probably shouldn’t expect a pretty grade. Sorry…

Whether you did or didn’t pay attention all semester and are trying to catch up now, here are a few things you should do during this week of stress.

1. Stop stressing.

Take a breather. First of all, while passing your exams is probably a good thing, it is NOT the end of the world if you don’t. It happens. We are human. You will survive. Life will go on.

But you are not going to fail. So take a few breaths, drink some water, and keep scrolling.

2. Eat good food.

I know it’s really tempting to indulge in sweets or pizza during finals week, but don’t over do it. Have a little something, something here and there. Just make sure you get other foods in too.

Some good brain foods are blueberries, apples, avocados, nuts, leafy veggies, and dark chocolate. Yes, chocolate.

Reward yourself with a little candy or cookie after completing a paper or filling out all your note cards and then keep going! Rewards aren’t just for after finals. Taking small steps and realizing those are achievements will motivate you!

3. Workout

What? Workout?! Hell-to-the-no! You crazy?

Calm down. It doesn’t have to be a two hour, max out, high interval, balls to the walls workout session! But get your brain juices flowing with a 15-minute walk around campus. It’s really beautiful outside right now, so go enjoy it for a second and relax!

Or even just get up and have a quick dance session!

4. Take breaks every 50 minutes.

Okay maybe you shouldn't do that ^ exactly... but get out of your apartment or library and get a change of scenery. At the very least, get out of your chair and go to the bathroom!

Studying for hours straight can overwhelm your brain and you won’t retain as much information that way. You need to relax and reflect. So every 50-70 minutes, take a 10-15 minute break. Text a friend, or check Facebook, or Instagram. Post to your Snap story what a boss you are for studying so hard.

Getting your mind off topic every now and then will help you focus when you need to be on topic.

 

5. Sleep!

I know it is super tempting to pull an all-nighter, but DON’T DO IT! Studies have shown getting a proper amount of rest is more beneficial than reading through your notes another five times.

If you are sleep deprived the day of the exam, even the things you know you know, you are more likely to get wrong. So shut down your devices and turn off your lights and check out for at least seven hours.

Just do it. Go to bed. Relax. Let your brain absorb what you have already studied.

6. Lastly, believe in yourself!

I know this sounds kind of silly, but having confidence can drastically improve your performance. Don’t worry about studying up to the last minute. Just go with what you know and own it.

You know a lot more than you think you do. Trust yourself.

Just keep calm and carry on.
